Climb the Eiger 2026

Climb the Eiger 2026

This March, our Group is taking on a proper challenge together: Climb the Eiger. This is a sponsored walking event designed to get everyone involved to raise vital funds for our Scout Group while having a fun day out.

The Challenge

The North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland rises 1800 metres tall and is one of the most famous climbing routes in the world. We won’t be climbing it, but we will be matching the height in an easier way!

Participants will walk from Newsome Scout HQ (Base Camp) to Castle Hill (Summit) and back, working in teams to build up the total height of 1800 metres. One round trip equals part of the climb and every lap counts toward the total!

There is no pressure to do a set number of laps, and our suggested number of laps is a guide, not a target. For those who do complete the below, this will go towards your Hikes Away activity badges!
● Squirrels: 1 lap
● Beavers: 2 laps
● Cubs: 4-6 laps
● Scouts: 6-9 laps
● Explorers: 9 or more laps

And for anyone who wants to push themselves, the full 18 laps completes the entire Eiger climb solo! What an achievement that would be!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Summer, our Explorer Scouts (14-18 year olds) are travelling to Kandersteg, Switzerland, for 11 days of Scouting adventure, challenge and international friendship. Their planned activities is expected to include walking from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald, just below the North Face of the Eiger itself!

This event will connect the whole group to that experience while supporting Scouting at every level and who knows, this maybe a trip your young one takes in the future!

The event is open to members of 4th Huddersfield Golcar Scout Group and their families.

Parents must walk with Squirrels, Beavers and Cubs. Families can choose to fundraise individually or share a single family sponsorship page. Whichever works best for you.

We will be staggering the start times to allow sections aiming to complete 9 laps or more to start first.

Explorers registration opens at 9 am, ready for a 9:30 am start.
Scouts registration opens at 9:30 am.
Cubs registration opens at 10 am.
Beavers registration opens at 10.30 am.
Squirrels registration opens at 11 am.

You can register later in the day; however, registration closes at 3 pm.

The event will finish at 4:45 pm.

The money raised will support trips, events and activities across all sections in the Group.

When larger activities come along, section team leaders can apply to the Group for support, which then reduces the cost to families. This fund has already helped make some fantastic experiences possible, including;
● Explorers – Kandersteg International Trip
● Scouts – France International Trip
● Cubs – White Wolf Nerf Battle
● Beavers and Squirrels – Loulabelle’s Jungle Animal Visits
● All Sections – Group Camp 2025 – All activities (Low ropes, climbing, air rifle and Gladiator challenge)

Quite simply, fundraising like this supports a fun and varied program and helps to keep Scouting affordable and accessible to everyone.

One lap (Base Camp > Summit > Base Camp) is approximately 2.5km (approximately 1.5 miles).

The height difference between Newsome Scout HQ and Castle Hill is approximately 100 metres.

No, you can turn up from your section’s registration time until 3 pm and start your walk.

Remember to start early with enough time to complete your number of laps.

Once your laps are complete, you may either check out at Base Camp and leave the event, or maybe you want to do another lap?

Uniform is not required, please dress for the weather and remember your waterproof coat!

We would recommend appropriate footwear; older sections undertaking many laps would be best wearing hiking boots.

Members should wear their 4th Golcar Necker. Kandersteg Participants should also wear their Kandersteg Event Necker.

If you are at the event during lunchtime, please bring a packed lunch. You will be able to leave bags at Base Camp (the start location). If the weather is fine and dry, we’d suggest, for one of your laps, taking your lunch with you and eating at the summit, allowing you to take in those lovely views!

Water, Squash, Tea and Coffee will be available at Base Camp throughout the day.

We also hope to have drinks available at the Summit; this will be confirmed nearer the event.

We’ll be looking for volunteers to help marshal the event. We’ll be sending this out to all Kandersteg Participant Families and Leaders shortly.

If you are a parent of a younger section and want to help out, please let the Leader Team know at your next meeting.
