Our weekend on the high seas! - 19/09/2011
The third weekend of September saw the Cub Section set sail to Blackhills Campsite for our indoor pirate themed weekend.
Friday evening consisted of some very gloomy weather and lots of heavy rain, all the leaders were releaved that the weekend was an indoor one considering the rain! On arrival, we began transforming our building into our pirate ship, flags, banners and the like.
When all of the budding shipmates arrived they moved into their bunks for the weekend and unpacked their gear, swiftly followed by being split into crews and designing their own flags for their crews. We also went for a walk around the campsite where Chill and Shere Khan taught that we really didn't need our torches to walk in the dark! The Cubs were amazed with what they could see without their torches, it took some convincing to make them walk without turning them on though!
Saturday morning was an early start with Sausage Buttys prepaired by our Ship Chef for the weekend, Jo. After breakfast and washing up the morning bases began! sifting through sand for burried treasure with Chill, decorating biscuits to make them look at little more piratey with Hathi, sword fighting with Shere Khan (of the Wii of course!) and making shiny hooks with Baloo.
After our bases and a quick drink break, we all built ships using card, paper and other miscellanious materials. The idea being to make a boat that would float and hold a bendy man for atleast 2.5 minutes. All of the ships managed to pass the 2.5 minute boundry, we only had 1 ship sink and that was Josephs after 3 minutes! Unlucky shipmate Joseph!
After that Chill chose the best 6 ships based on originality, build quality and how long they floated for. These 6 ships and their creators went into the final - The Sinkoff! The overall winner was Anna, whos ship at held 23 Bendy Men (all that we had with us) and loads of pieces of silver! Wow!
After the boats we had a quick lunch and went outside and had a go at the string trail that had been set up earlier. With a cup full of water, you had to move your cub along the string, going in and out of bushes, around trees etc while keeping as much water in your cup as possible. It was hard!
After tea, we played "Pin the Eye Patch on the Pirate". Everyone had a go, and was rather funny watching people stick the Eye Patch on the pirate, especially people who missed the pirate completely! Following this was a watch of our 60th Group Anniversary DVD and then Muppet's Treasure Island.
Sunday morning commenced with kit inspection and Scouts Own, the usual Sunday morning activities on camp. Afterwards we went and did a treasure hunt around the woods that Shere Khan had organised. It was ace!
Great fun was had by all & nobody came home from the great sail with cabin fever or peg legs!
