Beavers hold a magical Weekend - 29/08/2011

Preparations started many months ago and before we knew it, it was time for our magical weekend. On the Friday the Beaver leaders tried to turn Scammonden into a magical castle, all ready for the Beavers and their Parents!

7.p.m. On Friday, Beavers and Parents arrived and soon set up their bedding. Everyone made their way to the lounge for the welcome meeting. After the ground rules were laid out, it was time to start the magic!

Everyone knows a good wizard needs a magic hat, so the first activity was to make our hats... Lots of glitter and paint later, the hat's were made and we were on our way to become wizards.

After it was time to go inside and watch the 'Magical Faraway Tree'. When the film was finished, it was time for bed (for the Beavers). Lots of patience and many hours later, all the Beavers had finally gone to sleep. Parents and leaders then got to know each other!

Despite a late night, it didn't stop the Beavers from waking up early, this was much to the leaders and parents disapproval! After Breakfast it was time for activities!

The first morning was activity was to make and decorate a spell book. Beavers were told that the spell books might come in useful, as a magic show was going to be performed by the Beavers and parents! Lots more glitter and sequins later and the spell books were finished. It was then time for our dam walk! We all got kitted out and set off! En route we had to look for small bags. These contained magical items that were also needed for our magic spell, they were all way around the dam! At the compass point we found a geocache. We explained what this was to the Beavers! Ben, Explorer leader would be very proud! We carried on around our dam walk. Upon arrival at the centre, we were in time for lunch! Perfect timing!

After lunch we started on our afternoon activities, which we were lucky enough to do outside! These included:

- making wands (a vital part of being a wizard)

- model bats and spiders

- wizard wobblers

- wizard pom poms

- making witches brew with Dom and Tom

- and a vital base, pizza making for our tea!

The afternoon visitors arrived and did the activities as well.

Because we had hit gold with good weather, many also just played some relaxing games in the sun!

It was soon time for tea, and everyone enjoyed their pizzas that they made earlier!

After tea it was time for 4th Golcar’s Magic Show. All the Beavers and Parents had been practicing for the show throughout the weekend and all had to perform one trick! It was a great success and showed that all the Beavers (and the parents) had turned in to true magicians!

The afternoon visitors departed and it was quiz time and then off to bed! The Beavers were shattered and thankfully it didn’t take them as long to get to sleep! Parents then endured Elaine's quiz, which was harder than first thought!

Sunday was also an early start. But, thankfully not as early as Saturday! After breakfast, we made a start on the activities! Activity one was a competition in which we all decorated a model airplane and we had to fly them to see whose went the furthest! Luckily none ended up in the dam, but there were some impressive planes flying around. After we had outside games and got the parachute out, this was a lot of fun! After dinner, everyone packed to go home, and while the parents has the unfortunate task of cleaning the centre, the Beavers got to have a go at balloon modeling. Soon it was presentation time where we presented the awards! Then another Beaver weekend was over with! A great success and now to start thinking about next years!
