Group Camp - 26/07/2011

Group camp this year was a huge event held at Walesby Forest Scout Camp near Nottingham.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts , Explorer Scouts, Leaders and parents all joined together to make the event a success. The theme of the weekend was Robin Hood.

The advance party went down on Thursday evening to get things prepared. The children arrived by coach at lunch time on Friday. Once the tents were up we had a tour of the site (it’s huge!) and then it was onto the evening activities – watching the Scout production of Robin Hood, making Robin Hood hats, Maid Marion headbands and banners for tomorrows team events.

On Saturday everyone was split into ten teams – Red Minstrels, Green Foresters, Orange Archers, Grey Fletchers, Purple Rangers, White Friars, Black Smithies, Blue Poachers, Yellow Jesters, Brown Millers. Each team had an adult leader (in appropriate costume).

There were 10 bases, each designed to train up the new recruits for Robin Hoods Band. The bases were: Grapling Hooks, Senses deprivation, Jousting, Horseshoe throwing, Staff fighting, Coconut shie with soldiers helmets as targets, Crossbows, Signalling, Giant catapult, Wrestling. There was also archery on the wii throughout the day.

After lunch we went to Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to have a look around the Robin Hood exhibition and at the Major Oak Tree.

On returning to site we found that King Richard and some of his soldiers had arrived. They showed us some examples of the weapons they used and told us about the Crusades.

After tea there was a wide game and then we all went to the site camp fire.

On Sunday we spent the morning on the lake rafting. The sun came out and everyone had a great time.

The weekend went really well – a massive thank you to all the Leaders, Committee and parents that made it happen.
