Cubs go back to basics on camp! - 27/06/2011

This weekend 30 Cubs took part in a back to basics camp at Bradley Woods.

Cubs arrived on Friday evening ready for an evening of adventure, starting with the putting up of tents (or atleast the inners, the tents had magically already been put up). By the time the tents were finished and the Cubs had moved in and unpacked it was raining fairly heavily which changed the evening activities, the Cubs had a tour around the campsite and spent the rest of the evening under the parachute around a toasty warm fire!

Saturday breakfast consisted of Bacon Sandwiches & Cereal, prepared by our much appreciated cooking team! After breakfast we did a little woodcollecting to catch up on what wasn't done on Friday night and then started our bases for the morning. Bases were Bird Feeders, Firemaking, Making Twists & Signalling.

The Sixers and Seconders at this point had left us and started to create their own campsite to get a taste of what it's like to be a Scout! They roped off their campsite and pioneered a gateway entrance complete with a sign with all of their names on. They also put up a Canvas Bell Tent to sleep in (a circular tent which is very different from our normal tents!).

After dinner everybody had an opportunity to go to the shop to buy sweets & other goodies. The afternoon activity for the majority of the Cubs was Orienteering. Around the campsite there are posts with numbers on. The Cubs had to navigate around the campsite to find the correct post to find their values.

During this the Sixers and Seconders were learning about advanced fire lighting techniques with Chill. Charloth, Flints and the like were all covers so the Sixers/Seconders will be experts by the time they're in Scouts! Afterwards they all gutted their own fish, cooked it and then had the opportunity to eat it if they wanted to!

Evening entertainment included wide games and the campsite campfire, they were a little short staffed so our own Shire Khan helped to lead the campfire! All the Cubs were very tired by this point so took an early night!

On Sunday, all the leaders were rudly awakened by the sun, our tent was directly under the sun making it too warm to sleep! Breakfast consisted of sausage sarnies and cereal, followed by a scouts own. After that, the work commenced! Tents to take down, kit to pack, parachutes to pack away, which was all made harder by the extreme heat, but atleast it wasn't raining!

Overall it was a great camp and all the Cubs said they had a brill time! Be sure to check out the photo gallery for pictures from camp!
