Explorers Concur The 6 Peaks of Great Britain! - 23/06/2011

To celebrate the Group's 60th Anniversary, Explorer Scouts have been climbing the 6 Peaks of Great Britain. Each peak represents 10 years of scouting at 4th Golcar.

In April, 6 Explorers completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge consisting of Penyghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m) all in one day!

In May, 9 keen Explorers completed the National 3 peaks of Great Britain: Ben Lomond (974m), Scafell (978m) and Snowdon (1085m). This was done in three days over May bank holiday weekend.

Due to adverse weather conditions on the summit of Ben Nevis we went with our backup plan and climbed Ben Lomond. At 974m high this Scottish Munro is still a very demanding climb, the weather and wind speeds were very poor which made this peak even more challenging. After summating this peak we headed to Glasgow where we stayed overnight at a local Scout Hut, we arrived there fairly late and had homemade curry for tea/supper!

The second morning was an early military start as we left the HQ dead on 8am and drove down to Seathwaite in the Lake District as we ascended up Scafell. The weather conditions were much better but still patchy at times. It was Christian's Birthday, a friend met here at the summit with two birthday cakes and candles! The cake was just enough to deep us going back down the mountain. We arrived back down at the bottom, had a bite and another long drive to our next accommodation, 1st Broughton Scout HQ in Preston, which was a very traditional posh cosy Scout HQ.

After a good night sleep we had another early start as we drove to Snowdonia where we climbed our last and final peak, Snowdon! The weather was much better with clear views all around and a wind free summit. The Explorers were quite suprissed to find a train and a café at the top of this mountain.

After a group photo on the summer we all sung Happy Birthday to mark our Group's 60th Anniversary.

This is a massive achievement to all Explorers that took part in both the Yorkshire and National 3 Peaks Challenges. To complete this at their age is an unbelievable achievement, with lasting memories to treasure for a lifetime. The group are very proud of them all!

Well done Explorers - You are a credit to the group!
