Scouts respond to the catastrophic event in New Zealand - 26/02/2011

In the wake of the catastrophic event currently unfolding in Christchurch, Scouts New Zealand have launched a `Sponsor a Blanket` initiative as a gesture of goodwill, and in a small way assist those who are trying to get Christchurch and Canterbury back to some sense of normality.
The emergency services in New Zealand have identified a shortfall of blankets to help those left homeless by the 6.3 magnitude earth quake which occurred very close to Christchurch on Tuesday 22nd February.
Scouts New Zealand have spoken to the Civil Defence and other relief agencies on the ground in Christchurch and the surrounding areas and have committed an initial consignment of 500 blankets which are being sent immediately to the welfare centre near Christchurch.
“We are calling on all Groups from within SCOUTS New Zealand and further afield to help us to help Christchurch in a coordinated and useful way” – Scouts New Zealand.
4th Golcar Scout Group have donated $210 New Zealand Dollars (approximately £100) to the Scouts New Zealand `Sponsor a Blanket` initiative. Our Donation will provide 21 blankets to the appeal and these should be on the way to the Christchurch area very soon.
Bear Grylls, Chief Scout and Adventurer, who was filming around 150 miles south west of Christchurch when the earthquake hit said; “My heart and prayers are going out to all these guys who are now fighting for survival”.
If you would like to donate to the appeal please visit www.scouts.org.nz for more information.
