Mayor appeals for scout leaders - 17/07/2010

The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Andrew Palfreeman, is appealing for volunteers to become leaders with their local scout group.

The Mayor and Mayoress with leaders at the Huddersfield South West Scouts AGMCouncillor Palfreeman said: “At this time of year the Mayor is invited to many scout group AGMs around Kirklees and at them all I am impressed by the contribution made by the adult supporters.

“It is a sad fact that nationally 33,000 young people would like to join their local scout group but a lack of adult helpers makes this impossible.

“Volunteers would be welcomed however much time they are prepared to devote. It doesn’t have to be a massive commitment, but it will be satisfying and fun and you would be joining a worldwide family making a real difference to the lives of young people.

“Scouting has moved on in recent years. It’s no longer about knots and Bob-a–Job. It is a multi-faith movement which has been open to both boys and girls since 1976 and 44 per cent of its leaders are female.

“I would appeal to anyone who thinks they might like to become involved to look at the scouting web site or contact their local group.”

The scouting movement nationally provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people of both sexes aged 6-25 by promoting physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being, helping them to achieve their full potential.

It believes that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

Most of all, the young people have fun taking part in a wide range of activities and adventures which might not be available to them elsewhere.
