Summer Camp 2007 - 23/08/2007

This years summer camp was a nine day epic in Kent. We left Huddersfield on Saturday 11th August with ten Scouts eight Explorer Scouts one Cub and seven adults travelling in two mini buses and a transit van. Our first overnight stay was a Gilwell Park the home of Scouting. In the evening we had a tour around the site which is huge with lots of points of interest. We then travelled down to our main site at Herne Bay in Kent. Despite the absence of grass the site at Ross Wood was quite pleasant and we found we were sharing it with some German Scouts. On the first evening we drove to the local town and had a walk along the shore line of Herne Bay there was a really nice sunset. On returning to the site we did a quiz and made knots out of strawberry laces which we then got to eat On Monday we visited the Hastings battlefield at Battle. We looked around the Abbey and walked around the battlefield listening to the audio tour. In the afternoon we went swimming in Herne Bay Leisure Pool it had a decent slide but the jacuzzi pool was freezing In the evening the Scouts performed plays on the Battle of Hastings and some of them gained their Entertainers Badge. On Tuesday we spent the day at Dover Castle. We had a tour of the Secret Underground War Tunnels and completed a questionnaire as we toured the Castle. In the evening we sewed our Union badges on our uniforms and wrote postcards to send home. On Wednesday we went to the beach at Minnis Bay we had a great time building sandcastles and swimming in the sea. After our beach picnic we went swimming in Deal leisure pool. In the evening we made jigsaws from pictures of events this year then we had a quiz to guess the events. On Thursday we went to Calais for the day. We travelled as foot passengers on the ferry from Dover. The crossings were quite calm and everyone seemed to enjoy the trip although we seemed to spend a lot of the day queuing for buses Once in Calais we had a French style picnic and watched the Scouts have great fun in the fair. In the evening we had a quiz about chocolates. On Friday we visited the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge. There were lots of things on display and lots of interesting facts about the event. After lunch we went swimming again in Herne Bay Leisure Pool. In the evening the Scouts organised and ran their own camp fire. On Saturday we left our main site at Ross Wood and travelled to Milton Keynes. We had lunch at Woburn Safari Park then drove around the park seeing allsorts of wild animals. The monkeys were a particular hit as they seemed to like climbing onto the mini buses. Unfortunately it rained heavily for the rest of the afternoon so we didnt get chance to see much else at the park. We then drove to Stoney Stratford where we had fish and chips for tea and stayed overnight in a Scout Headquarters. On Sunday we drove home to Huddersfield. It was an action packed nine days and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
